Best Practices in Crisis De-escalation Workforce Development: From Burnout to Belonging

Wednesday, December 2 | 4:00 - 5:15 PM

Crisis de-escalation training can accomplish far more than preparing staff to respond when behavior escalates. In this session, Andy Prisco explores how method-based crisis de-escalation training can support broader organizational efforts to strengthen workforce well-being, advance trauma-responsive practice, and transform patterns of interaction with children, youth, and families. Central to this approach is a simple but consequential premise: before workforce members can effectively influence another person experiencing dysregulation, they must first develop the capacity to recognize and regulate their own responses to stress, fear, and conflict. Drawing from implementation experience across behavioral health, juvenile justice, and human services, the session examines how organizations can use crisis de-escalation workforce development as part of larger cultural and practice-reform initiatives that strengthen both the people providing care and the people they serve.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify how fear, stress, and physiological arousal can influence workforce members’ perception, decision-making, communication, and behavior during challenging interactions.

  2. Describe how method-based crisis de-escalation training can help organizations identify and revise established patterns of interaction that may unintentionally contribute to escalation, conflict, or coercive responses.

  3. Explain how developing workforce capacity for self-regulation, intentional communication, and effective response to dysregulation can help organizations move from trauma-informed principles toward more consistently trauma-responsive practice.

  4. Examine how method-based workforce development can influence employee confidence, resilience, interpersonal effectiveness, organizational culture, and the experience of people receiving services.

  5. Identify opportunities to integrate crisis de-escalation principles into everyday workplace and care interactions rather than limiting their application to acute crisis events.
