NACBH Strategic Plan: Sustainability Goal Statement

“There is no stability without solidarity and no solidarity without stability.” – Jose Manuel Barroso

Sustainability for the National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health has meant a strong dedication to the core values and purpose for over 30 years.
While there are a lot of things one “could” do to advance the field of children’s behavioral health, NACBH has remained laser-focused on advocating for the policies, procedures, and systems which best allow behavioral health service providers to meet the needs of youth and children in most need.

With the introduction of this strategic plan, it’s remarkable how much opportunity there is to embrace change and the evolution of our systems of care, while maintaining this focus. One thing that it will take to reach our strategic goals? Solidarity. Each NACBH member, partner, and stakeholder brings unique experiences, program offerings, and challenges to the table, but each also comes bringing a fervent passion for service. In the midst of change, it can be tempting to cling to our own unique needs and issues. Solidarity will never mean that NACBH expects members to check those things at the door, simply that by focusing on what we all share and what we can accomplish in this amazing community, we can maintain a healthy, strong, organization that continues to advance children’s behavioral health for another 30 years and beyond.

The tactics to achieve organizational sustainability for NACBH may not be the ones nearest and dearest to our hearts – they tend to be more functional and practical. But, without providing an ongoing, stable, and transparent foundation for NACBH, the organization can’t be sustained. Allowing our passion for service to drive creativity and innovation in these initiatives can bring all NACBH members together in an even stronger, more stable community than ever before. So, whether it’s identifying new opportunities for NACBH services, partnering with more organizations interested in contributing to our mission, or monitoring fiscal status – each NACBH member and stakeholder can be confident knowing that the contributions you make are providing that firm foundation which will ensure NACBH remains stable and sustainable. Maintaining our solidarity of purpose will always be at the forefront, join the strategic planning initiative today to channel your dedication to our purpose through these new opportunities!

NACBH Strategic Plan: Identity

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” – Jimmy Dean

There are certainly no shortage of sayings, quotations and inspirational thoughts about change. Change is hard, change requires a lot of us, and change disrupts the automatic responses that our brains default to at the neurological level. And yet, change is an inevitable part of life. We can try to avoid or resist it, but ultimately, it’s happening – and aside from technology, healthcare in the United States might be one of the most constantly-changing environments there is.

Perhaps that is why The National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health (NACBH) has been such a haven for dedicated child behavioral health executives for so long. When discussing the core values and identity of their association, NACBH Board Members spoke most passionately about the community that it provides and how that has been a sustaining factor through their careers. But, they also recognized that NACBH hasn’t always been successful in finding that voice to share how critical that community can be with behavioral health peers. Goal two of the 2019-2020 NACBH Strategic Plan is to position NACBH as a community for leaders and emerging leaders impacted by policy and rapidly-changing environments.

More than highlighting how NACBH is a community to support one another through change, the strategic plan goal drives the association to help members adjust their sails and find new ways to reach their destinations. Not only is your association dedicating resources to strengthening your advocacy voice, NACBH is also looking at the needs of the Children’s Behavioral Health field in new ways, targeting programming to keep you ahead of inevitable change and supporting you as you embrace the new opportunities change provides.

NACBH Strategic Plan: Membership

“No one belongs here more than you.”  – Brené Brown

Finding a membership association in which you truly belong can be a challenge. Myriad organizations exist to provide education, training, and resources to support professionals in the field of behavioral health, but at the end of the day what really makes the association is its community of members. That’s why the first goal statement for the National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health (NACBH) Strategic Plan focuses on building a diverse, dynamic, engaged membership which sustains the growth and reflects the values of NACBH.

Charlene Hoobler -- Chief Operating Officer of the Barry Robinson Center in Norfolk, Virginia and member of the NACBH Board of Directors -- couldn’t have put it better when she described NACBH as a “group of forward-thinking CEOs and Executive Directors of Children’s Behavioral Health Systems, all mission-driven and focused on business trends, best practices, and public policy.” NACBH is a true community, one that welcomes all who work to advance the field of Children’s Behavioral Health. It’s not an organization in which you have to “fit in.” You already belong.

A critical component of NACBH’s vision for the future is to cultivate a thriving membership community, one on which children’s behavioral health leaders can depend for a year-round exchange of ideas to advance their organization’s programs, services, and operations. Fulfilling this component of the strategic plan is an amazing opportunity for NACBH members, staff, and partners. There is so much in store over the next 18-months to bolster development of this community, and you can get involved!

  • Help NACBH demonstrate value to both current and prospective members by contributing to the Membership Recruitment and Retention Initiative;
  • Share your story as NACBH implements a marketing and awareness campaign to elevate core policy issues on the national and state level;
  • Strategize new ways to provide community and network support to like-minded professionals nation-wide!
