New Study Finds that More than 1 in 10 Pediatric Ambulance Runs are for Mental Health Emergencies  

A recent study highlights the severity of the youth mental health crisis in the United States, revealing that over 10% of children taken to the hospital by ambulance in 2019-2020 had behavioral health emergencies, with 85% involving 12-17-year-olds. The study, led by Dr. Jennifer Hoffmann, emphasizes the lack of national guidelines for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in managing pediatric behavioral health emergencies and notes regional variations in sedative medication and restraint use.

New Study Reveals that U.S. Children, Adolescents Account for Million Emergency Room Visits a Year for Mental Health 

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study reveals that the average annual emergency room visits by children and adolescents seeking mental health treatment exceeded 1 million from 2018-2021. The research underscores the rising trend of mental health disorders in this demographic, with suicide attempts and suicides on the rise over the past decade. Due to fewer psychiatric care facilities and limited access to outpatient services, many youths increasingly rely on emergency departments for immediate mental health care. Approximately one in five patients were admitted or transferred to psychiatric facilities, and 25% were prescribed psychiatric medication.

While schools are a setting for and can be providers of Medicaid and CHIP-covered services, the State Medicaid/CHIP agency has the leading role in determining which services are covered by Medicaid and CHIP when furnished in or by schools and how school-based providers are paid. Therefore, the rules vary greatly depending on the state and are generally quite complex. It is often difficult for individual schools and school districts to understand and properly comply with such varied laws. This results in substantial losses in funding for Local Education Agencies (schools and school districts) across the country.
