Mental Health America:  Call for Conference Proposals

Applications due:  Monday, January 9

Mental Health America’s 2023 conference will focus on Next Gen Prevention, exploring ways to promote lived experience, advance health equity, and focus on social determinants of health.  They are particularly interested in workshop proposals related to:

  • Youth and Young Adults – creating solutions in partnership with young people.
  • Social Determinants of Mental Health (SDOMH) – identifying, responding to, and understanding the SDOMH and their impact on health equity.

MHA Releases State of Mental Health in America Report for 2023

Mental Health America has released its annual collection of data across the 50 states and D.C., demonstrating the prevalence of mental health concerns and access to insurance and treatment, particularly as that access varies among the states. 

The report is a companion to online interactive data on the MHA website, including a wealth of state and national data and shareable infographics.  NACBH members are encouraged to review the State of Mental Health in America for nuggets that may inform your programming, flesh out your advocacy messages, or inspire other uses for this timely information.  Previous years’ reports are also posted.

 

Simulated Driving Program Reduces Crash Risk for Teens With ADHD

A small study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found a nearly 40% lower risk for a crash or near-crash for teens with ADHD using a particular training methodology, compared to a similar group who did not undergo the training. 

Focused Concentration and Attention Learning (FOCAL) is a computer-based program that teaches neurotypical teen drivers to limit long glances away from the roadway.  For this study, the researchers enhanced the training by adding a driving simulator that provides immediate feedback on long glances, calling the combined training FOCAL+.

CARF Field Review:  Crisis Standards

Deadline:  Monday, December 19

CARF International is updating their Crisis Services standards, to go into effect next year.  Leslie Ellis-Lang, Managing Director of Child and Youth Services, asked us to share the link to the online field review as widely as possible to ensure that the standards truly represent current best practices in serving children, youth, and young adults.  

Respondents do not need to be affiliated with CARF-accredited organizations.  Input on the proposed descriptions and standards, including their organization into a continuum of crisis programs, is welcome from all interested parties.  Please feel free to share this information with your colleagues and partners and to contact Leslie with any questions.
