Trauma-Informed Guiding Principles for Working with Transition Age Youth

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) has produced a new provider fact sheet with guiding principles for supporting transition-age youth who have experienced trauma.  Focused on young people between the ages of 16 and 25 with various public systems involvement, the brief describes the unique experiences, challenges, and needs of these emerging adults.  Strategies and concrete actions are suggested for mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice providers to enhance the capacity of youth to succeed.

 

Family First:  Prevention Clearinghouse Posts New Ratings

The IV-E Prevention Services Clearinghouse has posted new ratings for 13 prevention services.  This brings the number of rated interventions to 117, 55 of which “do not meet criteria.”  Only 16 are “well-supported,” 17 are “supported,” and 29 are “promising.” 

When Congress returns from its mid-term election break, we’ll track FY 2023 appropriations for which, if any, policy changes may be made to requirements for use of IV-E prevention funds.

DOL Announces Workforce Development Funding Opportunity

On October 3, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced the availability of $80 million under the Nursing Expansion Funding Opportunity Announcement.  The grant will fund programs that address bottlenecks in training the U.S. nursing workforce, and expand and diversify the pipeline of qualified nursing professionals (including behavioral health nurses and psychiatric nurse practitioners) through two training tracks:  Nurse Education Professional Track, and Nursing Career Pathways Track.

Applications are due by January 6, 2023 on grants.gov.

ASU Offers Certificate on Human Trafficking

Arizona State University offers two self-paced online training courses through its Career Catalyst platform for a Certificate on Human Trafficking.  Participants will be better equipped to screen youth for indicators of trafficking, recognize the signs and symptoms of traumatic stress, and support affected youth.  The courses are Fundamentals in Human Trafficking and Practical Applications on Human Trafficking, and are approved by the National Association of Social Workers for six continuing education contact hours per course.

 

NIH Research Highlights

The National Institutes of Health has released new information about two topics of interest to NACBH members:  Family-Based Intervention Lowers Long-Term Suicide Risk in Youth, and Prenatal Cannabis Exposure Associated With Mental Disorders in Children That Persist Into Early Adolescence.

The first, a Case Western Reserve University study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, examined the impact of a family-based intervention called the Family Check-Up (FCU), using data from three randomized controlled trials.  The FCU program was originally designed to prevent the development of substance use and conduct problems in youth by improving positive parental support, problem-solving, and communication skills.
