SAMHSA Issues Two Notices of Funding Opportunity

Application deadlines:  October 13 for Project AWARE, October 17 for ReCAST

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education):  SAMHSA plans to issue 20 awards of up to $1,800,000 (each) per year for up to four years. 

ReCAST (Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma):  SAMHSA plans to issue 10 awards of up to $1,000,000 (each) per year for up to four years.

New Resource:  Behavioral Health Workforce Burnout

SAMHSA has issued the latest in a series of evidence-based resource guides, Addressing Burnout in the Behavioral Health Workforce Through Organizational Strategies.  The guide provides an overview of the prevalence, contributing factors, and implications of burnout.  It presents organization-level strategies to prevent and address burnout and outlines broad lessons learned from previous studies on causes and mediators in areas such as workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values.  Finally, the guide describes programs that have implemented some of the highlighted strategies and provides guidance and resources for evaluating organization-level initiatives to address employee burnout and monitor outcomes.

 

Department of Education Seeking Peer Reviewers for Grant Competitions 

The Office of Safe and Supportive Schools is seeking qualified peer reviewers to read and evaluate discretionary grant proposals for several competitive grants, including the two mentioned in the White House story, above.  The review process for these grant programs is anticipated for November and early December.  Reviewers will receive an honorarium after successful completion of all assigned work and proper submission of mandatory forms.  Interested reviewers can apply at any time.

New Healthcare Workforce Safety and Well-Being Resource Portal 

The Joint Commission (TJC) has launched a new Healthcare Workforce Safety and Well-Being portal in response to the burnout and workplace stressors exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.  TJC accreditation is not required to access the tools, resources and strategies compiled in the portal.  It contains free materials developed by TJC, the National Academy of Medicine, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Kinship care promotes stability and a sense of belonging, particularly as children maintain connections with their family and cultural identity.  But kinship and grandfamilies can face unique challenges when parents of the children in care have a mental health or substance use disorder.  Challenges can include accessing specific developmental services for infants and children with prenatal substance exposure as well as tending to children’s emotional, physical, and behavioral conditions across developmental stages.
