Arkansas’ Rapid Medicaid Unwinding

Nearly 45,000 Arkansans who remained on Medicaid because of the pandemic protections had their coverage terminated in April alone. Of those 45,000 Arkansans, 85% lost their coverage for procedural reasons (inaccurate contact information, incomplete renewal paperwork, etc.), according to data published by the state Department of Human Services. While the Medicaid unwinding is happening across the country, national health care experts are paying special attention to Arkansas for two reasons.

SAMHSA 2023-2026 Strategic Plan Summary

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a draft of its 2023-2026 strategic plan. The plan follows the four guiding principles that lead all of the agency’s work: equity, recovery, trauma-informed approaches and commitment to data and evidence. In the plan, SAMHSA identifies five priority areas to better meet the needs of individuals, communities and service providers.

President Biden’s Budget for FY24

On March 9th, President Biden unveiled his FY 2024 Budget blueprint for Congress. The President’s budget outlines his past success and priorities moving forward, with a focus on “growing the economy from the bottom up and the middle out.” Through spending and policy proposals alike, the proposed budget includes several noteworthy investments related to behavioral health care and the well-being of children.

NACBH Proposals to Senate Finance Committee on Improving Access to Residential Behavioral Health Treatment

NACBH has submitted policy recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee in response to five mental health bills drafted by the committee last fall. The five Senate Finance Committee draft bills covered a variety of issues related to mental health coverage under Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace plans.

NACBH Memo to Member Organizations on Results of December Omnibus

NACBH has created a memo summarizing the most impactful provisions to children’s behavioral health passed in the December Omnibus. This legislative package was significant in size and effect: extending telehealth flexibilities, covering LMFTs and intensive outpatient programs under Medicare, and providing funds and technical assistance to school-based mental health services.
