Who Leads Next? Building Leadership Pipelines in Children's Behavioral Health

With 70% of nonprofits lacking a formal succession plan and a wave of long-tenured executives set to exit the field by 2028, the succession crisis in children's behavioral health isn't coming — it's already here. In this high-energy, 60-minute interactive workshop, Dr. Undraye Howard and Dr. Loretta Howard — behavioral health administrators, executive coaches, and co-hosts of Leadership Matters with the People's Doctors — challenge leaders to move beyond replacement thinking and build true succession cultures inside their organizations. Using the Identify → Invest → Ignite framework, participants will diagnose their pipeline readiness, work through a real-world case scenario, and walk away with practical tools and commitments they can implement immediately. Through live polling, small group discussion, and scenario-based work, this session doesn't just inform — it activates.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Distinguish between replacement planning and succession culture — and identify which approach is driving decisions in their organization today.

  2. Apply the Identify → Invest → Ignite framework to map at least one high-potential leader within your organization.

  3. Analyze a real-world case scenario to identify the systemic gaps that leave organizations vulnerable to leadership disruption.

About the Presenters: Dr. Undraye Howard & Dr. Loretta Howard

Dr. Undraye P. Howard and Dr. Loretta A. Howard are executive leaders, organizational consultants, and co-hosts of Leadership Matters with the People's Doctors on the VoiceAmerica Business Channel. Together, they bring more than seven decades of combined experience in nonprofit management, human capital development, healthcare administration, and leadership coaching. Dr. Undraye Howard holds a Ph.D. in Business with a concentration in Human Capital from Bellevue University and has held senior leadership roles across the nonprofit sector, including engagement and leadership roles and a collaborative appointment with the University of Michigan's Executive Leadership Institute. Dr. Loretta Howard holds a Ph.D. in Human Capital Management from Bellevue University and serves as Executive Director of a community-based organization and co-principal of Howard Communication Strategy Consultants, LLC — where she partners with leaders and organizations to build high-performing teams through practical training, skills assessment, and sustainable growth strategies. Their shared experience as influencers, operators, educators, and coaches makes them uniquely equipped to lead a session on succession planning that is both visionary in scope and grounded in the day-to-day realities of leading mission-driven organizations.
